The congregation was founded in Castellammare di Stabia on September 17, 1870.
On September 14, 1874, the institute was affiliated with the Order of the Alcantarine Friars Minor, and after receiving diocesan approval from Bishop Francesco Saverio Petagna (October 17, 1874), the first twelve sisters received the religious habit.
The original mission of the Franciscan Alcantarine Sisters was the education of poor girls, especially orphans. To their educational work, they added catechesis, parish activities, and street ministry. They also serve in listening centers, family homes, and day centers.
In addition to Italy, they are present in Albania, Brazil, Chad, Nicaragua, and Spain. The general headquarters of the institute is located at the Stella Matutina fraternity in Rome.
